Start with the language, then the price
Crypto is a broad category. Different networks and tokens can have different purposes, rules, and risks. A familiar ticker or a rising chart does not explain what an asset is for.
Begin with one project and its own documentation. Identify the network, its native asset, and what people use it for. For example, Ethereum is a blockchain network that supports applications, while ether (ETH) is its native cryptocurrency. Understanding that distinction is more useful than memorizing a list of tickers.
Four questions to guide your first research session
Use these questions as a reading checklist. You do not need to connect a wallet or open an exchange account to investigate them.
What does it do?
Find the project’s explanation of its purpose. Separate what is already available from what is planned.
How does ownership work?
Learn the difference between an exchange account and a wallet you control. Understand private keys and recovery phrases before handling funds.
What does the market data describe?
Identify the asset, currency, time window, and timestamp. A 24-hour change and a seven-day change answer different questions.
What is still uncertain?
Write down gaps in your understanding. Missing information is a reason to investigate further, not evidence that everything is fine.
A price move is the beginning of a question
Price tells you where an asset traded. Volume describes trading activity over a period. Liquidity concerns how readily orders can be filled without moving the price substantially. These measures are related, but they are not interchangeable.
When you see a large percentage move, check the time window and the supporting information. One number cannot establish whether a move will continue.
